Why don’t they gush?!

April 23rd, 2007 by Trish

Why aren’t people gushing over my ducks? I’m know I’m a little obsessed right now, but I’m frankly disappointed that people aren’t showing much interest. Yes, people do come over to see my ducks, but their comments are pretty limited. Don’t they know that the ducks are my new children?

Here’s a sample of some of the pitiful comments that I get from people:

“Nice birds.”
“You have ducks?”
“What do they eat?”
“I believe a dingo ate your baby”

For those that need a lesson on ducky etiquette, here are some better comments to remember in case you ever meet a woman with ducklings:

“Oh my! What beautiful birds!”
“Look at those feathers sparkling in the sunlight!”
“I can tell - they take after your husband.”
“Their bills are so delicate and refined”

I’m sure there are many other options for interested comments. Feel free to contribute your own. Fake it, if necessary.

Trish–I have been following your website dutifully to see what tips I can pick up from you. Your ducklings are precious! My babies are coming next week. We should talk sometime. I have two kids (5 and 7), into the natural childbirth things (bradley fan here) and am in love with my not-even-hatched ducklings already! How far are you from Pittsburgh?

Hi Kelly! Drop me an email sometime! I’m probably a little far from Pittsburgh, but you never know when I’ll be heading that way. I’ll keep you in mind. How many ducklings are you getting?

Kelly, I just re-read your post on that other forum. I see you are getting ducks from Holderread’s. Which breeds did you order? Reading Storey’s Guide, I was kind of admiring the Harlequins and Appleyard’s and thinking that I might want one at a later date. And they seem to have a pretty high egg production too. I’ve already realized that ducks can be addictive.

Hi Trish–I am getting 2 f&w runners, 3 anconas, 3 magpies and 2 welsh harlequins. i will be soooooooo bummed out if there isn’t at least one female of each breed. i too got hooked on ducks after reading the “newagrarian”. this is a one time thing (this year at least!) from holderreads. if I don’t get the number of girls i want then i will do the order from myer’s (they have harlequins and runners but no magpies or anconas). if all goes well i hope to add two geese next year. our pen is still under construction but at least we got the fence posts up. these ducks better lay golden eggs to pay for the cost of construction! based on your website i now know i NEED to have them out of the house by three weeks (pending nice weather of course) because of the stink.

    talk to you soon!

i’ll send you a link with pics from “projectduckling”
