Resources for Raising Ducks
My pages on raising our ducks have been very popular lately. I’m guessing it’s because there doesn’t seem to be that many blogs out there that deal with it, and maybe also that it is Spring and prime duckling season. Anyway, I thought I’d post about some of the sites that I’ve found to be very helpful so far in our duck project.
All Purpose Reference Book: Storey’s Guide to Raising Ducks. Every duck owner should own this book, no escaping it. Order it now.
Blogs, Informational sites: The New Agrarian
Aviary Netting: J.A. Cissel I bought Toprite II Plus and used it to top my permanent enclosure. This will prevent attacks from hawks and other birds of prey, which are common in my area. I plan to use it to cover my mobile run also.
Message Boards: PoultryYouth.com has a wonderful waterfowl forum. The Poultry Connection has an excellent waterfowl forum with some very experienced members also.
Leg bands: Industrial Webbing Corp. At the suggestion of the New Agrarian, we bought velcro wire wrapping tape to label the ducks with. So far it has worked very nicely. Industrial Webbing sells roles of the tape that can be cut to size and regularly replaced. Since I only need to know the difference between my two Khaki Campbells, which are identical, I just label the legs of those ducks. It’s obviously easy to tell the difference between my black runner and my fawn and white runner. The velcro strips also don’t cut into their legs and can be easily removed and replaced when necessary. Rolls of this stuff are also really cool to have around when you have an imaginative 4-year-old. It’s amazing what you can do with velcro tape.
