Costa Rica: now or never

July 8th, 2007 by Arp

My commitment to unschooling is growing, to the point where it is becoming a way of life.  M is making some incredible strides lately, from asking many thought-provoking questions to creating his first fully-fledged story.  Unschooling works.  He’s obviously learning and really enjoying it too.

I, on the other hand, am not enjoying life as much as I’d like.  Trish probably isn’t either, and it’s definitely time for change.  We’ve had a nebulous dream for years of Moving Someplace Cool and Living More With and In Nature.  This nebulous dream has crystallized over the past 3 years to be something very specific:  a move to Costa Rica.  Land of biodiversity, warm weather and adventure.  Sure, we can find nature and warm weather in America, but that’s not our dream.  We want exotic tropics and a new culture.

The question has always been When would we be able to do it?  My web design work has always been geared towards making money remotely and it’s coming along quite nicely.  But working 60 hours a week is taking its toll.  I’m still not spending as much time with my family as I’d like to.  Then I realized it’s like deciding to have a baby - it never seems like the time is right.  But at some point it feels right and you forge ahead.  The baby comes, life changes drastically and you adapt.

Our dream can’t wait anymore - the time feels right.  We need to shed everything we don’t need, take a scouting trip and sell our house.  I already feel a difference when working on my business because it’s all about making our dream come to life.

Oh that sounds so good. I would give my right eye to ditch this place and the trappings. If only that darn money stuff wasn’t in the way. LOL I can’t wait to hear more about you guys escaping. Maybe it will inspire me enough.

So when is this happening? Now that I’m doing my own blog I have to check out yours too! Do I get to visit your new tropical home?

Yes, you’ll get to visit. In fact, considering all the allergy-prone friends I know, we’re determined to have an animal-free guest house wherever we move to! The time-frame? Not sure, but it seems like we’re getting closer and closer every day. I’d be happy if we had the house on the market sometime in 2008.

That Darn Money stuff is the main roadblock, which is why I’ve been working on making money from the internet for the last couple of years. There may be some light at the end of the tunnel too, but I’ve learned not to count my chickens before they hatch.

I have a date in mind too, but I’ll reveal that at a later point. I agree with Trish that putting the house on the market in 2008 would be great. We have a lot of crap to get rid of and some beautifying projects to do.
