I’d certainly hope so. You’re probably not, if you’re a wealthy corporate scion. Or hate gays. Or believe that freedom does not include the right to choose. Or are one of the 8 people not connected to the White House who still believe that invading Iraq actually had something to do with catching Bin Laden.

Here’s the headline from today’s New York Times (yes, that bastion of liberal media whose coverage of 2000’s election chicanery was pathetically not liberal):

Bush Is Prepared to Veto Bill to Expand Child Insurance

Apparently, increasing a tax on cigarrettes and spending $30 billion more to fund this program is just too much for the nincompoop running the country. Or perhaps more accurately, the people pulling his strings. Their sudden fiscal responsibility is hypocritical. The cost of war in Iraq is at $443 billion and rising, plus the loss of so many American lives.

Perhaps there is a flaw whereby the Child Insurance bill would waste some money. However, like the environment, name we one reason why erring on the side of caution is a bad idea. If we can waste money on Halliburton contracts, throwing away $10 billion in an effort to provide health insurance to children is a no-brainer.

I hope more Republicans in Congress break with the White House and work in a proper bipartisan fashion to ensure that the head nincompoop can’t veto bills left and right. America needs Congress to work together like real people rather than continuing the us vs them crap that got us where we are today. And I really hope the next presidential election presents 2 good options. I may be a flaming liberal who’s unlikely to vote Republican, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a candidate that I can grudgingly respect on the other side.
