I actually think there was some fear involved in deciding against Cahuita while we were there. During the drive I remember thinking how remote it felt, how Guapiles and Siquerres were bigger names on the map but were little more than small strips of civilzation along the way. Then getting there and realizing what a population of 3,000 really was (according to the Moon Costa Rica guide). It was very different than any other place I'd been before. But it grew on me, and the beach and the wildlife were marvellous.

Trish is also a beach person and doesn't want to be too far from the water regardless of where we are. We didn't get a chance to check out the Pacific beaches this time, and I'm curious what the difference (in the water) is. What are some good beaches on the Pacific side that aren't overdeveloped and aren't too far from the Central Valley?

GREAT post! We are trained to be logical... what a crock! Here's the trick: separate gut from emotion. Anyway, you know me, I vote Central Valley, especially to start. The transition is hard enough... see you sometime!
