Pictures from Cahuita, Costa Rica

Can you tell that my kids love the beach? They were generally so exhausted at the end of every day that were couldn’t take them out to dinner. Thankfully, we did manage one meal at Miss Edith’s and a few other quicky pizza snacks at Hotel National Park, but otherwise it was hard to fit in eating.

We made a friend on the beach. A l!ttle g!rl from Limon.

Tik-tikkis on the bed, tik-tikkis on the ceiling, tik-tikkis everywhere!! Yes, I know these are geckos, but Arp calls them tik-tikkis from his childhood in India. So that’s the name our family uses. Someone suggested to us that maybe Arp calls them tik-tikkis because of the noise they make every so often, a kind of chirping sort of noise (are they trying to attrack a mate, or yell at the tasty bugs?). It had never occurred to us why we were calling them tik-tikkis, but I suppose that might explain it.

Breakfast at the communal kitchen at Alby Lodge.

Howler monkeys in the trees above out cabina. I just love these creatures.

Broken coral washes up all over the beach at Cahuita. It’s wonderful to look at all the different kinds. But after reading about how the coral in the area is severely depleated, I felt a little sad. Evidently, inland building washes silt into the ocean, which clouds the water, blocking sunlight and killing coral. As beautiful as Costa Rica is, filled with its’ dozens of parks and protected areas, I wonder how much the development of the country will end up hurting all the creatures that live there.

M just loved his “big log”. Give this kid a piece of driftwood and some moving water and he needs nothing else. Funny thing is, Arp kept harping on whether we should bring sand toys on our trip. I thought he was crazy, and I wasn’t about to lug a plastic shovel and bucket around Costa Rica for a month. Well, I was right this time. Need a shovel in Costa Rica? Just grab a stick (make sure there are no ants on it first!). Need a bucket? Grab a half of a rotten coconut shell. And if you really want to entertain my kids, give them a giant piece of driftwood.

Oh, wow. My wife and I call any little lizard a “Tik-Tikki” because of Arp, too!
Great kids at the beach photos - thank you! Even my big kids still love the beach… sand, water, sun, waves… what’s not to like?
Wow, it looks beautiful there! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your trip. P.S. Maya thought the tik-tikki looked more like a yee-haw (her word for horses).
I’m glad to know that other people in the world are spreading ‘tik-tikki’ far & wide
Wow, it looks so fun! I’m envious!
I love seeing all of you having a great time. I’m not too sure about the tik-tikki, gecko or whatever they are. I remember having something like that on the walls at Guadaloupe when we were at Club Med. I was always afraid they were going to land on me. Are they like a salamander? That’s what I thought they were there - but maybe I was wrong. I assume they are harmless?
Keep having fun!!
