Choosing between these 4 companies I would give a preference to Dream Host. This company has a stable reputation at the market and good customer reviews.

Thank you for the article. I’m reading up on differenct hosting services because I’m going to start my own blog and want to know who to go with. I’m soooo green at this that it’s embarrassing, so I thank you for the input.

I really expected more from MT after Dreamhost and it was basically the same performance for twice the money.

Overall, I think you get what you pay for, but I’m still surprised at AN Hosting. Uptime for most sites is around 98-99% (though there will be some weeks where it’s worse, when some other site on the server causes a problem). For anyone starting out, budget hosting is the only option unless they have enough revenue to cover the cost of a VPS.

I used Media Temple because you see their logo on a lot of reputable sites, but my experience has been pretty poor. Performance is no better than Dreamhost. Frequently I try to go to one of my sites and get “the server at … taking too long to respond.”

I wonder if their VPS is any better than their GS service, because GS is no good. I was under the impression that using “hundreds of servers”–by now it’s probably thousands–would mean no downtime, but quite the contrary. Service on GS is no better than any regular single-server hosting.

I’m starting to think that any kind of budget hosting is just not going to be reliable, but I may give AN Hosting a try.
