Places I have breastfed my babies

Always without any kind of cover-up. Thankfully, I have never been discriminated against in any way, although I unfortunately know women who have been. U.S. laws pertaining to breastfeeding discrimination need to be made stronger in the U.S. We need to have laws that clearly spell out punishments for those that discriminate against breastfeeding mothers.

In honor of my nurslings right to receive  both food and comfort anywhere and anytime they need it, here is a list of just some of the places I have nursed my two children:

  • on the floor at Barnes and Noble, with my two week old son nursing in my lap.
  • at the grocery store – on one of those hard benches by the cash registers.
  • grocery store – in a sling as I walked and did my shopping.
  • in any number of places in Central Park, NYC
  • at my local suburban playground
  • in a church
  • at the library
  • in the mall – on one of those public benches right in the middle of things.
  • in the mall – food court
  • At the Bronx Zoo – food court and Bengali Express Monorail
  • On the subway and subway station, NYC
  • At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, and the Museum of Natural History, NYC
  • At tons of La Leche League meetings
  • Attachment Parenting meetings
  • In the pediatrician’s waiting room and exam room
  • At my own doctor’s appointments
  • Lot’s of restaurants – TGI Friday’s, Cheesecake Factory, Chinese Buffet, and even some “nicer” restaurants.
  • At many many beaches, with bikini pulled aside, in  the U.S. and a few in Costa Rica
  • In the jungle, Costa Rica, with howler monkeys in attendance
  • On my couch
  • In bed, almost every night (except for maybe a 3 month period after M self-night-weaned while I was pregnant with J) for the last 6.5 years.

(I think I’ll have to edit this post as I think of other places that I’ve nursing my children.  I’m sure there are many more places to add to the list.)

I don’t remember everywhere I breastfed but certain places do stand out in my memory:

    On airplanes
Restaurants, from Olive Garden to fancy
Lots of bathroom stalls in various places in the beginning when I was shy about it (guess that doesn’t count as public, really)
Lots of dressing rooms (actually pretty comfy, and much better than a hard bench or bathroom stall)
Interstate 80 while hubby drove from Boise to Albuquerque and baby was in the carseat. Those were tricky, but we managed, and the interstate was usually empty tho I’m sure a truckdriver or two got an interesting eyeful
    Family gatherings
    Parks

That’s all I have time to think of. I nursed both babes for a year and it was a beautiful experience. I just had NO libido during that time so that’s why I didn’t go longer, but my kids are just so wonderfully healthy and I credit that years of Liquid Gold, co-sleeping, no vaxes and never a drop of antibiotics for that. Oh, and healthy diet during pregnancy.;)

I meant YEAR of Liquid Gold, not years. I just remembered too, reading about your LaLeche meetings, how I did it all on my own and at one point the pain was so unbearable it was necessary to bite down on a folded washrag during latch-on to avoid screaming. Very worth it but it sure dudn’t feel natural, and if there is a next time I sure hope to find the proper support instead is suffering through the first 3 weeks in agony!

    Sarah,
Let me know if you ever need breastfeeding support in the future. I’ll be there for you! Good support can make such a difference!
