Homebirth in Australia – Blood boiling!

27 February 2009 3 views 3 Comments

I’ve been reading about various governmental reviews of homebirth midwifery in Australia for some time now, and feeling fear in my heart for all the women and midwives in Australia that want to keep it going.  But several recent blog entries, here and here, are making my blood boil.  I want to cry for the women and midwives of Australia that are under seige.  I’m really hoping that the midwives and supportive families can pull together and change things before it’s too late.

I’d like to see a world in which all families have access to safe, legal homebirth with an independent midwife.  Looks like the Australian government is hoping to turn midwives back into witches and burn them at the stake.

That is aggravating! I just don’t understand why there is so much opposition to something that seems like a common sense choice. ugh!

Our government seems to be moving in the direction of Australia’s. Not with midwifery yet but with supplements and raw milk, little freedoms being taken away. Our gov tried to outlaw BHRT – big pharma can’t patent BHRT because it’s made from natural ingredients… boo! Very sad when governments too big and wield too much power. At least we live in a fairly inefficient socialist country. I like to say we may not be free-er, but we feel free-er!

Yup. Back about 5 or so years ago, when we were researching possible countries to move to, Australia was crossed off our list because it seemed like it was moving in the same direction as the U.S. – little freedoms being chipped away at, and little tolerance for anything at all less than mainstream and government-approved. Makes me sick. God forbid a government trust its’ people to have brains of their own.
