I’ve had about 10 days with them - I got them last Monday, but they may have arrived sooner since I hadn’t checked the mail in 3-4 days. This fits with the timeline provided by Zenni Optical:

Most orders will be delivered within about two weeks , orders which require some extra, special or custom lab work like progressives, bi-focals, custom suntint, or extra strength prescriptions can take three to six days extra.

I ordered my my glasses on June 19, and due to my stronger prescription, the additional 3-6 days count. If they were shipped in 2 weeks and 3 days (on July 6th), they came right on time for regular first class (aka not Priority) mail.

It’s been a few weeks since I went to the opthalmologist, and I’ve finally gotten a moment (or decided to give myself a moment) to take the next step. From the doc I got my prescription, but she was unable to measure my pupillary distance (PD) because she had nothing to measure in millimeters, which sounded terribly careless and half-assed to me. Measuring that isn’t rocket science, and I don’t think she or her optician is any better at making a rough measurement using nothing but their hands, a ruler and their eyes. If they were using some gadget to measure the PD to the nanometer, I’d consider letting a ‘pro’ handle it. But they’re not, so I’m taking care of that myself, with some assistance from the lovely Trisha. Here’s what I did to measure my PD: Read more »

The glasses

June 7th, 2007 by Arp

my broke-ass glasses

Here are my glasses.  The arms aren’t supposed to be spread outlike that - the frames had some nifty mechanism to keep them in place, which was great.  Until they broke, of course.  The arms then cost $75 to replace.  The frame, I presume, was pretty expensive.  They’re ‘Hugo Boss,’ some overpriced fashion victimizer, but I got them for free as I traded a wool overcoat for them.  My friend whose glasses they were got them for free from his vision plan.

The arms have been broken for awhile, so they tend to slip off from time to time.  Since my prescription hadn’t changed, I still had 20/20 vision when I was tested last week.  Obviously, the fit doesn’t have to be perfect as long as the prescription and pupillary distance (PD) are right.  I’m going to measure the width of the frames and use that as a baseline for my online shopping.  I’ve been too busy this week to do any proper shopping and ordering but hopefully later I can get Trish to measure my PD and take a picture of my face for virtual fitting purposes.

Buying eyeglasses online

June 2nd, 2007 by Arp

I’m going to buy eyeglasses online. It sounds bizarre, not trying on frames and stuff, but the last pair I got (7-8 years ago) was so expensive (almost $400) that I haven’t gotten a pair since. My back up pair is my bent glasses from … high school. That’s better than Trish though - she has no backup. It’s a bit risky for two people who can’t function without them, but we never considered possible alternatives and assumed that the next pair we got would cost just as much. (We, like most people, have no vision coverage.)

I was pleasantly proven wrong by an article in the NYT about the growing online eyeglass industry. I’d considered it briefly before, mainly to save money on the frames, but it seems that people are buying complete glasses, lenses and all, for less than $50. For that price, I can try several pairs until I get something I like that fits right. Read more »
