Guanábanas in Colombian Market

I’d like to know how Tica Macha’s song goes because we used a song to help us remember too, except we didn’t come up with it ourselves. Guanabana is pronounced is just like the old Muppet song Mahna Mahna. Frankly, I can’t even think of the fruit anymore without singing the Muppet song. Or going to Doo te do doo after hearing or reading the word Guanabana.

Arp on TV?

April 2nd, 2008 by Arp

On Monday, Mo Rocca stopped me in a park in the East Village.  I noticed him standing with a cameraman, pointedly trying to ignore me as I walked towards.  I realize that my sexiness knows no bounds, and Mo being a fragile human, he had a hard time looking away.

As I walked past them, he sprang into action and accosted me.  The exchange was probably forgettable.  If he was still with the Daily Show, I can see John Stewart making fun of me.

Mo: Excuse me sir.  What were you just thinking?

Arp: I was thinking what the hell are you doing here?

Mo: No, no!  Before that?

Arp: That the economy is going to hell.

Mo:  Really?

Arp: Yeah.  Like the US is a house of cards and all that.

Mo: Thank you.

It’s better than my one actual appearance on TV.  I was on the high school bowl team, specifically for having more arcane knowledge since my two partners had the usual stuff (president stats, etc) covered.

The problem was that I had stage fright and didn’t answer questions that I actually knew.  So when I finally got the gumption to answer an art question, I buzzed in and said Wyeth?  That was my tv career so far.  Maybe Mo can jumpstart it.

A Brush with Petey

January 24th, 2008 by Trish

Pete Seeger, that is. My lovely little sister took me to a benefit concert the other night to stop the relicensing of Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. What a fantastic show it was! Performers included Pete Seeger, Ani DiFranco, Gail Ann Dorsey, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, and the New York City Children’s Choir. I believe I have expressed my love for Pete Seeger in the past, but it seems that I have now found a new folk singer to love…his grandson Tao. Read more »

Secret Door Co-Operative Mystery GameBefore we left for Costa Rica, we were playing Uno and Yahtzee pretty often at home. Sometimes M was really happy and complimentary when he lost and other times he was a REALLY sore loser. Unfortunately, losing happened more frequently, and he seemed to get really worked up about winning and would often change or attempt to change the rules to aid his cause. I sometimes lost on purpose and did my best to model good behavior. Games can be fun, they can exercise the mind, they can be social - there are lots of good reasons to play games. I’m not keen on promoting the fact that the sole purpose of a game is for one person to be the winner and to lord it over everyone else.

But he he seemed to get competitive about drawing or building with Lego and other activities. At the last Unschoolers Support Group another parent pointed out that younger kids may need the finite, black and white resolution. That makes sense, but I wondered if there was anything different. I was, for most of my life, hypercompetitive, and I do hope that he doesn’t follow that path. Not being judged and compared to others based on grades for years on end should help, but I needed to find something that expanded the horizons and started searching online. I thought I could find a game whose object wasn’t to win, but to my pleasant surprise, I discovered a game genre called Co-Operative games, where the goal is to work together. This was better than I could have imagined. Read more »
